History
Everybody thinks Epi-pens are the first and only cure for peanut allergies but that is absolutely wrong. The first cure found for peanut allergies were Ana-Kit also known as Anapen .It is an injectable medication that is used for an immediate treatment for a severe anaphylactic allergic reaction, such as an allergic reaction to an insect sting, a food, or a drug. It is also used to treat severe asthma attacks. It can help control such symptoms as itching, sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes. Ana-Kit contains two drugs: an epinephrine injection and chlorpheniramine tablets. This drugs are only found in genetic versions. The Anapen looks completely different than the Epi-pen. Anapens have a safety cap over the red fire button to prevent accidental firing, and also has a sheath covering the needle end as well. To fire the pen you have to remove the black needle sheath, then the grey safety cap covering the firing button. At the end place the needle end firmly tightly against the patient’s thigh and press the red button and inject it into the patient’s leg for 10 seconds. This is the process you have to go through every time you use the Anapen. That is Why in World War two The Anapen got gradually replaced by the Epi-pen. The Epipen got replaced by the Anapen because when using an Anapen it was required you to draw up and measure epinephrine from a vial. Since this might cause you to added more or not put enough epinephrine, this will cause an error in the process. While when using an Epi-pen you don’t have to measure the epinephrine, which makes your job simpler and will not cause an error. An Anapen cannot be reused but a Epipen can, that is another reason why majority of people like Epipen more than Anapen. Anapens are designed for anyone not just people that are trained on how to use Anapens. Anapens contain dose of ephedrine (300 ug/0.3 ml for adults or 150 ug/0.3 ml for children).Epinephrine is the main substance that cures peanut allergies.Epinephrine opens the airway in your lungs and then narrows your blood vessels, this can help cure severe allergy reactions. Tee Anapen was approved by New Zealand Regulatory Authority. The Anapen is no longer available in the US, but the Anapen isn’t completely gone. There is an Anapen 2 that just came out in Ireland! Most people don’t think about how the Epi-Pen came to be, but there is a rich history behind the Epi-Pen. The Epi-Pen was created in 1978 by Shel Kaplan, a NASA engineer. During the Cold War, the military injected themselves with an antidote (Much like the Epi-Pen) for nerve gas and other combative substances. Sheldon realized that with a few adjustments, he could create a possible cure for anaphylaxis. And that is exactly what he did. He made some improvements, and created the Epi-Pen. He also created the Combo Pen, the Pneumo Pak, and the first ever emergency medical kit for the Apollo Moon Missions. All of these inventions were developed at Survival Technology in Bethesda, MD. The Epipen actually replaced the Anapen. The Epi-Pen was a lot easier and faster to use than the Anapen. So now, the Anapen has been forgotten by most people, and the Epi-Pen has been called “The only treatment for anaphylaxis.” The Epi-Pen has completely overshadowed the Anapen. Kaplan saved many people’s lives with his inventions. Sadly, he died in September of 2009 at 70 years old.
This is the main parts in the history of how the process of anapen and epipens have been going on and how they found a cure like this. There are many different and odd reasons how someone thought of using this device to cure allergies. Anapens were first used for military purposes. Then only started being used as a device to cure allergies. There is even researchers that are still trying to find ways to improve the anapen and epipen. That are hoping to fix all the cons of the current devices that are being used so far. We hope that this timeline will keep continuing to make all this kids that have this allergies be able to try peanuts at least on time in their life!
